What happened in Japan on 11th March 2011 was a tremendous tragedy, the reverberations of which are not over yet. With all the countless human tragedies it brought, there was maybe one single positive effect: The world realized that nuclear power IS potentially very dangerous und uncontrollable. People are again thinking about and are increasingly against nuclear power. So far, so good.

Every other weekend we now read and hear about hundred thousands of people gathering in German cities to protest against nuclear power. The message is clear: Switch them all off and do it right now.

Very good, I agree. What I still wonder, though, is: How many of those protesters boil their tea water and dry their hair with nuclear power every morning? Looking at the number of people who buy their electricity from renewable energy providers, the number of those people must be quite high.

My dear fellow citizens, in very few areas of our daily life it is so easy to directly influence politics: Just switch to a renewable energy provider today. If everyone who is suddenly against nuclear power acts like this, our nuclear power plants are soon history. It costs not more than 10 mins to fill in the form and few additional Euros every month. The latest study commissioned by our minister Horst Seehofer confirmed what we all have known for ages: The Germans are fat and becoming fatter and fatter. Half of the female and two-thirds of the male population are overweight. Germans are fatter than any other Europeans. Not surprising either: Less educated people with lower incomes tend to be much more often overweight than highly educated people with higher incomes. Medical expenses for diseases and medical conditions caused by malnutrition amount to 70 billion Euros!

One often heard explanation, especially by radio station callers: Less educated people are not able to afford healthy food. - THIS IS COMPLETE NONSENSE! The truth: For not more than EUR 70.- per person per month you can easily live on a healthy diet. And registering your kid at the local sports club is much cheaper than buying the DVDs and computer games which make them sit in front of the TV/computer all day and finally make them grow fat. ‘The inconvenient truth’ so to say is simply that people are too lazy live a healthy lifestyle.

Fat people directly cost our health care system more than EUR 70 billion per year! And why do I have to subsidize other people’s self-inflicted obesity with all associated medical problems? Why isn’t there any risk loading scheme for obese people? Why shouldn’t someone who drinks, smokes or lives on a very unhealthy diet pay himself for the consequences? Well, the answer is that our society - or at least the majority of it, including many of our politicians - think this wold be against our principle of solidarity or simply ‘unfair’.

You don’t understand why it should be unfair if you don’t want to pay for your neighbour’s excesses? Welcome to the club! You seem to belong to the few people with some common sense in this country…

Tourists coming to Germany are allowed to drive cars on German roads as long as they hold a driving license from their home country. This right expires after 6 months. Foreigner who want to drive even more than 6 months after they have entered the country have to pass the German theory and road test to obtain a German driving license.

This regulation is almost the same in most countries. So far, so good. But how does it look in practice?

1.) You go to the German automobile association to have your driving license translated into German. Of course their branch is situated at a place which is easy to reach by car, but difficult to reach by public transport. You have to go there at least three times because they make mistakes. Costs: EUR 40.-

2.) You find yourself a driving school where you can take a few lessons and then pass the two tests. Costs: approx. EUR 500.-
3.) Then you fill in your driving license form together with some other forms at the local car registration office. As you might guess, that place is unreachable by public transport. I guess no one ever realized that people who need to register their car obviously cannot use it to get there. Costs: EUR 43.40
At the office, someone will then explain to you that they have to confiscate your Indian (or whatever nationality) driving license ‘because it is forbidden by law to have two’.

And what do you do when you go back to India on holidays? You use your German one. The only problem: The Indian one includes motorcycles, the German one does not. So you effectively loose the right to drive them by getting a German license.

And what do you do when you go back to India for a longer period? Well, then you are allowed to drive for 6 months or something with your German license. And after that? Well, then you make your license again, this time in India. You again pay for that. You finally come out with two licenses which is forbidden in Germany by law, but nobody will know. And of course you wasted quite a bit of money thanks to our bureaucracy!

Politicians’ illogical behaviour at its best: A new law to protect non-smokers (the so-called ‘Nichtraucherschutzgesetz‘) from the negative effects of smoking was supposed to come into effect in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate on 1st November 2007. However, today the SPD (Germany’s Social Democratic Party) pushed through that the new law will not be effective before 15th February 2008. The explanatory statement: They do not want to spoil the people’s (i.e. the smokers’!) Fasching (Carnival) which takes place on 4th/5th February 2008.

Hmm…

If you ask me, smoking either IS harmful or it IS NOT. If it is, you should try to protect people from the negative effects of cigarette smoke as soon as possible. If it is not, you don’t have to protect them at all. But that’s my logic. It seems our politicians have a very different rationale which is beyond my mental capacity…

This is a serious question. Those of you who have already been to India will surely have noticed that all men wear formal shirts in the streets, no matter if they are walking around on business or during their leisure time, no matter if they are a top manager or a street sweeper. I think everywhere in the world a jobless beggar who has to walk the streets to look for some plastic bottles or metal he can collect and sell or maybe find an occasional small job which will pay him his meals for a days would likely wear a t-shirt. Not so in India. In India even those people wear formal shirts. They might be stained and dirty and even have holes, but they are formal shirts. Why’s that so? I have no clue… If you have a good or interesting theory, please do let me know, I am really curious!

Not just bigwigs in huge companies are often the target of bribers. Even if you are just working in a university’s international office some people might try to bribe you, although the sums are generally smaller. Look what just happened to my colleague.

As part of our work, we often have to issue various documents or letters for students which they need in order to do an internship, to apply for a scholarship, be admitted into Master’s courses etc. In 99% of the cases it’s not a question of IF someone will get the letter, but rather WHEN. Generally this takes us maybe one day as we generally are not keen on dropping whatever we are doing at the moment just to sign some student’s documents because his plane to xyz is leaving in three hours and he did not manage to come to our office a bit earlier. But that’s a different story.

Just the other day a student wanted to have a certain letter from us which he needed for an application. He was probably concerned that it might take too long, so he stated in his email that he had noticed that Swiss Chocolate often helped ‘to make certain decisions easier’ and that he could indeed imagine himself coming round to our office to drop some chocolate.

Dear students, firstly, we are incorruptible. Secondly, if you really want to bribe us, you need to bring up some bigger sums, not just Swiss Chocolate!!

On a short visit to the Christmas market in Neustadt, a small town in the Palatinate, Kshitij and I spotted this sign right in front of the train station. It warns the passers-by of the possibility of chestnuts falling down from the trees above! I feel so save in a country which wants to protect its citizens even from falling chestnuts!

On our flight back from London Heathrow to Frankfurt (my colleague and I spent about 10 days in England on a business trip) we had a very annoying and enlightening experience with the airport security which made us shake our head more than once. Actually at some point I started thinking we were in a madhouse with the travellers being the only sane people in there. The whole story might follow if I find the time to write it down, but to already give you an idea of what to expect here two of our new learnings:

1.) It is forbidden to have two small handbags as cabin baggage. However, if you put the two handbags into a big plastic bag it’s okay for the security.

2.) A small 5 g tube of lip balm is considered to be a potential threat (’liquids’) and therefore is confiscated by the security. A snowstorm globe filled with approx. 150 ml of water (or whichever other liquid) is obviously considered to be absolutely harmless as it was not even spotted by the security, although the bag which contained it was screened twice.

So what do we learn from this? The new ’security measures’ at Heathrow (which, by the way, differ from the new Europe-wide security guidelines) represent mere aimless actions without any thought behind them and have nothing to do with ’security’.

Yes, Mannheim is just a 15 mins drive away from the Palatinate, the big German wine growing region. And yes, the grapes from there are both delicious and fresh when you buy them in the supermarket.
Now look what I found in a supermarket last week: Grapes imported from India! Maybe they are a bit (not more than a few cents) cheaper than the local ones, but they do not taste as good as the ones from the Palatinate and they have travelled some 7,000 km to get here. Certainly the grapes haven’t profited from the travel and certainly the environment hasn’t either. -The perverse side of globalization!
